Day Two at Cardigan
Day 2 - HEI:On day 2 of the Cardigan hike and stay at the cardigan lodge, our group went to hike Mt. Firescrew and then the summit of Mt. Cardigan. On the way up we took many sketches of plants and trees like the first day. One of the sketches was of spruce gum. My group even got to try some. Scott (my groups trail guide) said that if we chew constantly on the gum then it would actually turn into a pink color and the texture would be rubbery. I mustve chewed for at least ten minutes and it didnt turn pink or get rubbery. The only thing that was keeping me chew on the spruce gum was that it tasted like mint! A little bit after we played a game about finding a clip in an area. Scott would hide the clip and then the rest of us would have to find it, but when we did we couldnt say anything about the clip and its place. All three rounds I was in the top three to find it. The trail after that was very steep. If I were to guess it would be a one and a half foot incline to a 1 foot incline for at least 5 minutes. But it was still very neat and fun. Afterward, My group had gotten off the trail on accident. Even though the trail led to another like it, we were still wrong. The trail markers had led up the rock instead of around the rock. The trail markers had been kind of confusing. The people that made them mustve thought long and hard about where to put the trail markers. When we reached Firescrew there was a fantastic view of all the other mountains and forestry. In the view there was a place where loggers had logged. It sort of looked like a shaved spot on someone's head. Although most of the trees had grown back most of the spot was still bare.
Once we had gotten to the top of Cardigan there was a fire tower and we got to go into it. I thought that it was very fascinating how they would use it to detect where a fire was. It definitely was a game changer for the environment, a good one too!
